Why AI Is Not The Answer
You might be thinking that you’re sure AI can proofread and edit text for you and make it error-free, however, although it can help it is never the whole solution.
- AI doesn’t understand context – most typos are words spelt correctly but used incorrectly – AI would not know to change these
- AI can cause errors as it “fills in the gaps” and sometimes does so with incorrect information, for example in references
- AI is generic – it uses the same patterns in text – human proofreaders can usually spot text written by AI as it is repetitive and boring
- Self-editing, other traditional tools and AI can help but are never as reliable as a human
- AI doesn’t understand the information it’s processing or the difference between facts and incorrect information
- Generative AI is “fed” with existing information, therefore, it might not be correct
- AI doesn’t have a moral compass and so doesn’t understand sensitivities
- AI is not aware of nuances of meaning or nonstandard expressions, including dialect and patterns of speech
- AI has poor detection skills when it comes to contextual spelling or grammar, subtlety of meaning, author voice and more
- Technologies can detect surface-level errors, but proofreaders use judgement to ensure context, tone, and industry-specific accuracy
- Proofreading is not just about words, it also means checking correct alignment, spacing, header levels and much more
